Factors to consider when buying a Laptop

There are so many types of computers available at the moment its hard to know where to start when trying to purchase one. However there are many factors to consider which will help make your decision easier.
As a student of any kind, cost is the first thing to consider! While some laptops carry an a thousand euro pricetag its not necessary to pay this and a couple of hundred should do!
When looking to buy a laptop an important thing to consider is its physical aspects, and i dont mean just the colour! The weight is a very important factor, as it needs to be light enough to carry into and around college all day.The same goes of the size of the laptop. While a big screen is great for programmes such as photoshop, the laptop should be a comfortable size for transport.
Brand is a huge aspect and probably the first to consider. Personally I like PC's and find that Windows is much easier to use for our course as everything is laid out and easy to find. I have also become comfortable using it with the likes of sideshowbob and storing documents and its easy to customize to exact specifications.
A very important issue is the speed of a laptop! As students we are often rushing to get essays done and are, in general, quite impatient! Average processor speed is between 2-2.9ghz so make sure to check the speed of the laptop before purchasing.
Also important is the memory of the laptop, for the Applied Psychology course we do alot of reseach so it is esential to have enough memory to store it, take notes, keep the countless essay drafts we have and store the sneaky music we've downloaded!
Don't forget about software either! For this course a good word processing programme is essentail. Powerpoint is also needed to download from Blackboard and to make up our own presentations. As for the technology side of the course the likes of photoshop and illustrator are extremely useful.
Another thing to consider is the battery life, it may not be possible to charge the laptop often, as it would be needed all day for college and then later to type up notes, do research etc. For this reason a long lasting battery is essentail.
Other aspects to check over before purchasing are the number of USB ports (needed to save and backup work), the internet connection (speed!!!) and and what kind of warrenty it comes with...(we are students afterall!!)

Article 2: Mobile Phones - Tumour Risk to youngchildren

The harmful effects of mobile phones has been in question for years and this article, published in the Times Online in 2005, speaks no different of the potentially fatal effects.
The report advises parents to not allow there children to use mobile phones if they are under the age of eight. Heavy use of mobiles led to the developement of ear and brain tumors, a Swedish study suggests and a Dutch study indicates changes in cognitave behaviour. The article discusses a call for bans of mobile phones in schools and for the devices to carry health warnings. However the studies presented in this article had to still be replicated and properly proven when it was written.
This talk of health risks has lead to outrage between mobile phone manufacturing companies as there is a lack of hard evidence, however one British maunfacturer has suspended a model aimed at young children.
The article is not the first of its kind; there have been many reports of cell damage and huge links to cancer. I think it is an important article which gives parents a lot to think about. While mobile phones are extremely handy for parents in knowing where there children are, over use of this technology may result in harmful effects on the health of children who are so young and still developing.

Article 1: Can social networking change the world?

My first article; Innovation: How social networking might change the world, looks at the positive side of social networking. While this topic is often in the news and media reports for negative reasons; like bullying, this article shows that social networking can make a positive difference. It can help people improve thier lives and makes them feel like they are part of something better and bigger.
Tim O'Reilly (founder of 0'Reilly Media) challenged the community-driven web to come up with something more productive then seemingly useless internet applications last year and this article gives examples of networks that use social networking to produce positive and beneficial results.
The examples include the Obama '08 application, which allowed campaigners to easily communicate and organize contacts; a social networking site called We20, which organised people to meet up and discuss economic issues and a site, Accesscity, where people analysis the best routes across London. All of these sites have been helpful to people across communities and advertise the benefits of social networking. The most impressive example is the site, Zimride, which claims to have enabled 300,000 users to carpool, thus helping each other and the enviroment hugely.
I thought this was a really good article to summarise as social networking is a great interest to me and it demonstrates the good it can be used for which is a nice change in comparasion to the bad media attention it noramlly gets. It also gives hope for a more positive kind of future for social networking. It shows the good in people and the will to do good, which the community-driven web can aid.
The article ends on a really nice note, which is Karma points. It is hoped that one day web users will compete for global karma points online to better the world further. It shows that computer technology and the internet do not need to be feared but it also importantly shows that the web has many uses and as well as sharing information it can be used to start something big and great, not just write up on it. The idea of Facebook users competing for Karma points just shows the good social networking already does and what the future could hold.

Seemly we have the day off and its lashing outside I decided to get going on some of the work that seems to continualy pile up! Found a good website while writing up the taste experiment from Clionas perception and ergonomics lab. It gives the layout of a psychology report with links to writing up each individual part and a sample essay. Very useful!!

Put off training to go 21s tonight but am sick!! :( :( Sooooo upset, half the country is heading out but im in pain! Cant even train, which means I'l end up going on Wed....fitness night!! Monday is bout half hour of fitness and the rest hockey...but wednesdays, an HOUR of fitness and then hockey drills that are really fitness in disguise!! No doubt it'l be raining on Wed aswell!

We were lucky on Saturday though! Lashed all morning, gale winds almost and was so gray it was almost black down here! My nan couldn't believe I was stepping outside the door let alone planning to run around for 70 minutes in it! Thankfully though on the way there it stopped and it magically became vaguely warm (although I could be biased considering I was legging about trying to play). Didn't get rained on at all :) quiet an achievement seemly I normally get soaked! Was the official opening of our new pitch (which we'v used few times before but it was the first time all teams of the club were playing at home!) so was good atmosphere around, we drew nil all so at least we still get one point!

Got absolutly soaked last week, to the bone, then hadta sit in the car all for half an hour shivvvvvering!! Hope it stays dry tonight, makes it slightly more barable! For some strange reason we seem to be doing more fitness then hockey...not impressed!! Im already wreaked from babysittin last night so theres not much chance of me doing fitness for an hour! We won on sat :) so thats a bitta inspiration (not enuf lol!)but hasta be done! Club hockeys muy serious lol, cept when we play soccer for warm up..thats a proper laugh, def proof theres a reason im on a hockey team not a soccer one!!
